Fortuño wins Puerto Rico primary
By YAISHA VARGAS, Mon Mar 10

PR (AP)- A pro-statehood Republican who represents Puerto Rico in Washington will challenge the incumbent governor in November's general election after winning his party's primary on Sunday.

Luis Fortuño won nearly 60 percent of the New Progressive Party (NPP) vote, according to preliminary results, setting up a showdown with current Gov. Aníbal Acevedo of the Popular Democratic Party.

Voting patterns in P.R. have shown a nearly 50-50 split between statehood backers like Fortuño, and supporters of the U.S. island territory's commonwealth status like Acevedo, who has been in office since January 2005.

Fortuño, 47, who is both a Republican and a member of the NPP, beat out powerful former Gov. Pedro Rossellóó for the nomination. He has been the island's nonvoting delegate in Congress since 2005.

"This movement is not going to finish until we have carried out real change in the lives of each one of you," Fortuño told cheering supporters in San Juan's financial district.

NPP voters also chose Pedro Pierluisi, an attorney and former secretary of justice under Rosselló, as the party's nominee to become Puerto Rico's new delegate in Washington.
