Subject: NPP Senator Pedro Roselló to Retire

Puerto Rico's Rossello to retire
03/10/2008

SAN JUAN, PR (AP)—Sen. Pedro Roselló, a former governor who led a campaign to make this tropical territory the 51st U.S. state, said Monday he will retire from Puerto Rican politics when his term ends after being trounced in a local primary.

Roselló, 63, who was governor of the U.S. Caribbean commonwealth from 1993 through 2000 and has remained a highly influential figure as opposition chief, said he will quit public life at the close of 2008 when his term as a senator expires.

His announcement comes after he was defeated handily in a Sunday primary for the right to run as the pro-statehood party's candidate for governor in a Sunday primary. Puerto Rico's nonvoting congressional delegate, Luis Fortuño, won nearly 60% of the New Progressive Party (NPP) primary vote, setting up a November showdown with current Gov. Aníbal Acevedo Vilá of the pro-commonwealth Popular Democratic Party (PDP).

Roselló, a divisive figure in island politics, was accused of corruption by opponents, while fervent backers of his NPP touted him as a "messiah" able to fix broken government. He presided over referendums in 1993 and 1998 in which Puerto Ricans narrowly rejected statehood.

Born in San Juan, Roselló was a tennis player in his youth who won 5 P.R. men's championships. He graduated in 1966 from Notre Dame University and in 1970 earned his doctor of medicine degree from Yale University. Roselló was later a professor at the University of P.R. and became San Juan's health director in 1985. He was first elected governor in 1992 and took office in 1993.

In 2004, Roselló was defeated by Acevedo by some 3,500 votes out of nearly 2 million cast in the governor's race. The close result, which Roselló's supporters challenged unsuccessfully in court, deepened a bitter rivalry between the 2 party leaders.
